HUBRIS

Overbearing pride evidenced by a superior manner towards perceived inferiors. It’s an age-old human failing: Pride Goeth Before the Fall.  Arrogance, excessive confidence. In ancient Greece, Hubris referred to actions that shamed and humiliated the victim for the pleasure or gratification of the abuser.  As for pleasure in hubris, its cause is this: naive men think that by ill-treating others they make their own superiority the greater. Hubris is the outrageous arrogance where a person in power overestimates his or her own competence and capabilities, gradually loses touch with reality and in Greek tragedies succumbs to a tragic fall.
